Find Your Ideal Fit
At Alpen Maison, we know fit matters—especially for Bavarian dirndl dresses, formal gowns, and other occasionwear. This guide explains how to measure yourself and how to ask about custom sizing before ordering.
Important: Custom or made-to-measure options are not guaranteed for every product. Please contact us with the item you are interested in to confirm availability, pricing, production requirements and expected timing before placing your order.
How to Take Your Measurements
Use a flexible measuring tape, stand naturally, and have someone assist if possible. Measure over lightweight, fitted clothing or the undergarments you plan to wear with your outfit. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug without pulling it tight. Record measurements in centimeters or inches and clearly state which unit you used.
1. Bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level across your back. Breathe normally and avoid tightening the tape.
2. Underbust
Measure around your ribcage directly beneath the bust. This can help assess bodice fit on some dirndl styles.
3. Natural Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, typically above the belly button. Do not hold your stomach in.
4. Hips
Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, standing with your feet together.
5. Shoulder Width
Measure across your back from the outer edge of one shoulder to the other. Ask someone to help for accuracy.
6. Sleeve Length
With your arm slightly bent, measure from the top of your shoulder to your desired sleeve end. This is particularly useful for long-sleeve dresses and jackets.
7. Dress or Skirt Length
For a skirt, measure from your natural waist down to the point where you want the hem to fall. For a full dress, confirm whether the product asks for shoulder-to-hem or waist-to-hem length. Stand straight and consider the shoes you plan to wear. Do not measure from the floor upward unless specifically requested.
8. Height
Stand barefoot against a wall and measure from the floor to the top of your head. This may help when discussing floor-length evening gowns.
Measurements for a Dirndl
For a German dirndl dress, the most useful starting measurements are usually bust, underbust, natural waist, and desired skirt length. Some styles may require additional measurements depending on the neckline, sleeve design, or bodice construction. Please check the individual product listing and our Size Guide.
